Conclusions: Hepcidin is negatively associated with the glomerular filtration rate, and it is not associated to iron deposition levels (ferritin) and grades of anemia. Hepcidin is positively associated to the per- centage of transferrin saturation. Therefore, hepcidin values could be useful to quantify the degree of absorption and availability of iron for erythropoiesis, avoiding excessive iron intake and the early onset of erythropoietin. The role of transferrin receptors is left for further research.
