This paper discusses the results of adopting an employee grading system in a corporate R&D and design institute, aimed at stepping up the quality of staff management, rationalizing the payment of wages, and increasing the motivation of employees to achieve target results. Edward Hay’s Profile Table Evaluation method proves the most applicable in establishing the employee title/duty assessment criteria. This method evaluates jobs based on the volume of knowledge and skills required to solve the respective tasks, as well as the employee’s direct duties and working conditions. In the R&D institute, such a grading system has helped to adequately match the level of wages with the tasks being solved by individual positions.
