Upper gastrointestinal bleeding caused by Strongyloides stercoralis: Highlighting a neglected parasitic infection

Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal nematode found inhumans infected by filariform larvae. It is prevalentthroughout the tropical and subtropical regions [1]. Afterpenetrating the skin, larvae enter vessels and are carried tothe lungs. The larvae then migrate through the respiratorytree, are swallowed with sputum, and finally mature intoadult egg-laying females in the mucosa of the small intes tine, especially the duodenum and upper jejunum [2]. Weperformed an esophagogastroduodenoscopy for diagnosis ofa case with upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding andobserved larvae microscopically, which is characteristic ofstrongyloidiasis. It is a challenge to manage a case ofintractable GI bleeding infected with this neglectedparasite.
