In 1970, Sir Harold Himsworth, Secretaryof the British Medical ResearchCouncil, published a book on the theoryof scientific knowledge in which he observedhow scientists add to the collectivecorpus of enlightenment (1). He rejectedthe Baconian picture of naturalknowledge as a ramifying tree, whichscientists explore by climbing like squirrelsup and out along the branches. Instead,he proposed the model of a greatsphere into which, more like moles, scientistsburrow centripetally from multiplestarting points on its surface. At anypoint, they start with a concrete problemand a practical aim.
