In this study, 100 surface soil samples around a representative coalmine (the Wolonghu coalmine) in the northern Anhui province, China have been col- lected, and the concentrations of seven kinds of heavy metals have been analyzed for pollution as- sessment. The results indicate that the concentrations of the metals are Fe>Mn>Zn>Cr>Pb>Cu>Co. Their CVs (coef?cients of variation) are ranging from 0.077 to 0.673, in combination with their low p—val— ues (<0.0 1) of normal distribution test (except for Fe, Cr and Cu), suggesting that their concentrations have been in?uenced by various factors. According to the result of the single pollution index and geo-accumu- lation index, Cr and Pb are light pollution, whereas the others are not polluted. The Nemerow composite index and the potential ecological risk index indicate that the soil samples are slightly polluted and with low potential ecological risk. Based on the statistical analysis (including the factor, cluster, and correlation analyses), and the spatial distributions of the heavy metal concentrations, the seven kinds of metals can be divided into two groups, Co-Cr-Fe-Mn and Zn- Cu-Pb, which represent geogenic and anthropogenic sources, respectively, and their mean contributions for the heavy metal concentrations in the study area are 47.0% and 53.0%, respectively as calculated by the positive matrix factorization method.
