This study was aimed at determining alterations observed in serum Haptoglobin (Hp), Ceruloplasmin (Cp), Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS) and Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase (eNOS) levels in calves with omphalophlebitis. The study material comprised 20 male and female calves of various breeds, which were aged 0-6 months and diagnosed with omphalophlebitis, and 10 healthy male and female calves of the same age range and various breeds, which were used for control purposes. Biochemical analyses demonstrated that the serum Hp (P<0.001) and Cp (P<0.05) levels of the patients and healthy animals differed significantly. Similarly, the statistical comparison of the serum eNOS (P<0.05) and iNOS (P<0.001) levels of the patients and healthy animals also demonstrated significant differences.In result, the statistical comparison of the serum Hp, Cp, iNOS and eNOS levels of the patients and healthy animals revealed significant differences. The higher iNOS and eNOS levels of the patients were attributed to oxidative stress. Furthermore, it was ascertained that the measurement of the serum levels of the acute-phase proteins Hp and Cp in calves with omphalophlebitis would aid in disease diagnosis as well as in the assessment of disease prognosis.
