Testing and Treatment After Non-Occupational Exposures To STDs and HIV

Women may present to an emergencyroom, a dedicated Sexually TransmittedDisease (STD) clinic, or their primarycare provider with concern for a STD includingHuman Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV) after a sexual exposure. The goalof this review is to provide an overview ofcurrent recommendations for the prophylaxis,testing, and treatment of the adultpatient for STDs and HIV after a sexualexposure, including sexual assault. Issuessurrounding appropriate referral, followup care, and emergency contraceptionwill also be addressed. Recently updatedrecommendations for the treatment ofsexually transmitted infections, as wellas recommendations for antiretroviralpostexposure prophylaxis after sexual,injection-drug use, or other nonoccupationalexposure to HIV are availablefrom the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention.1,2 These guidelines, as well asother recent data and expert opinion formthe basis of this review.
