Utility software firm VertexOne wins the race for ascendant WaterSmart

VertexOne's acquisition of WaterSmart this month has created a combined entity intent on dominating the market for billing, metering and customer software services among medium-sized water utilities in North America. With VertexOne traditionally focused on enterprise software such as customer information and billing systems, the addition of WaterSmart's customer engagement and usage analytics capabilities will round out its software-as-a-service solution for utilities. The deal had its origins in Vertex-One's planned takeover last year of the troubled Fathom Water Management {see GWI December 2019, p10), which utilised WaterSmart as part of its software offering.
