In 2017, the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) celebrated its175thanniversary, just as the 150thanniversary of the CanadianConfederation was celebrated. In many ways, the developmentof this organization over its long history parallels the explo-ration and economic development of our country, and thesetwo stories are very closely intertwined. In its early days, theGSC was involved in charting the essential geography of Cana-da’s landmass, and early GSC geologists were involved in someof the discoveries that laid a foundation for our modernresource economy. In the 21stcentury, the GSC remains at theforefront of geoscience research across the nation, collaborat-ing with many Provincial and Territorial partners and also withacademic and industry researchers to expand our knowledgeand find ways to sustainably develop our resources. Like allorganizations, GSC has evolved over the years, and must con-tinue to do so in response to technological innovation andsocietal demands. This article provides an overview of wherewe came from, where we have been, where we are today, andwhere we hope to go in the future. It is hoped that it will pro-vide a starting point for other articles highlighting some ofGSC’s more specific scientific contributions over the years, andexploring some of the many characters who colourfully popu-late its long history.
