Inthelastdecades,molecularbiologyhasmovedfromgene-by-geneanalysistomorecomplexstudiesusingagenome-widescale.Thankstohigh-throughputgenomictechnologies,suchasmicroarraysandnext-generationsequencing,ahugeamountofinformationhasbeengenerated,expandingourknowledgeonthegeneticbasisofvariousdiseases.Althoughsomeofthisinformationcouldbetransferredtoclinicaldiagnostics,thetechnologiesavailablearenotsuitableforthispurpose.Inthisreview,wewilldiscussthedrawbacksassociatedwiththeuseoftraditionalDNAmicroarraysindiagnostics,pointingoutemergingplatformsthatcouldovercometheseobstaclesandofferamorereproducible,qualitativeandquantitativemultigenicanalysis.Newminiaturizedandautomateddevices,calledLab-on-Chip,begintointegratePCRandmicroarrayonthesameplatform,offeringintegratedsample-to-resultsystems.Theintroductionofthiskindofinnovativedevicesmayfacilitatethetransitionofgenome-basedtestsintoclinicalroutine./p/div
