Report of the 8th CLIVAR/ CliC/SCAR Southern Ocean Panel (SOP) meeting Hobart, Australia, 21 – 22 February 2013

In February 2013 the 8th session of the CLIVAR/CliC/SCARSouthern Ocean Panel (SOP) was held over 2 days in Hobart,Australia. The science undertaken and workshops held since thelast panel meeting were discussed. Alberto Naveria-Garabarto updated the panel on the Southern Ocean Observing System(SOOS) and Steve Rintoul reported on the SOOS under-iceobservation workshop, held in Hobart in 2012. Lynne Tallyprovided an overview of the proposed C-SOBOM (Center forSouthern Ocean Biogeochemical Observations and Modeling)programme. Jan Zika presented his work on the ‘thermohalinestreamfunction’, a new technique to diagnose ocean circulationin temperature-salinity coordinates. The eddy physics of theSouthern Ocean and its impacts on the Meridional OverturningCirculation (MOC) and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current wereaddressed by Andy Hogg, whilst Tas Van Ommen reported onthe activates of the Antarctic 2K working group. Christian Jakobgave a presentation on cloud observations and modelling overthe Southern Ocean region and Dave Thompson presented thelatest findings and gaps in the knowledge about the mid-latitudeSouthern Hemisphere jet.
