Immunization against bovine dermatophytosis with live Trichophyton verrucosum

Dermatophytosis is an infection of the superficial, keratinized structures of the skin and hair of animals and humans.?Trichophyton verrucosum?is one of the main fungi that can cause dermatophytosis. In this study, we evaluated efficacy of immunization from live?T. verrucosum?vaccine against bovine dermatophytosis. 25 female calves without the incidence of trichopytosis were divided into two groups and 21 animals vaccinated with liveT. verrucosum. In 10 calves (group 1) after experimental infection, the protection induced by vaccination assessed through a clinical follow-up the animals to determine the presence dermatophyte infection after boosters. In 11 animals, (group 2) immune response including humoral and cellular immunity was evaluated. Presence of antibodies in the sera was determined by ELISA and cellular immunity, and assessed by lymphocyte stimulation test and counting of lymphocytes (CD4+, WBC and percent of lymphocyte). Our results showed that in group 1, after experimental infection, 90% of vaccinated calves have protective immunity against live?T. verrucosum?microconidia, but the results of?in vitro?tests in group 2 revealed that humoral and cellular immunity were not responsible for the protective immunity significantly. These results suggest that live?T. verrucosum?microconidia can produce protective immunity against dermatophytosis in vaccinated cattle.
