Management of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in the municipality should be in line with the provisions of the federal and state and ensure the maintenance of environmental quality. In this work a case study in the municipality of Cidade Ocidental - Goiás, which stands for MSW management by having a system of waste disposal consolidated composed of a landfill licensed and shared with the city of Valparaíso de Goiás, selective collecting and sorting central. The objective was to survey the environmental legislation and public policies on MSW management, assessing the applicability and contribution of these instruments for the current scenario. The desk research was conducted through secondary data collection as well as primary data collection of entities involved in the formulation and implementation of public policies for MSW. The results showed that there is a wide range of laws and policies applicable to the management of MSW in the city; However, the highlight of Cidade Ocidental in existing technologies can not be attributed to municipal policies , because they are not prepared to meet the reality in question both the institutional profile and municipal management do not follow what is defined by law.
