'What can I learn from the street?', 'What can I learn from the cats?', 'What can I learn from the others?' These questions appeared on walls and billboards in Istanbul last fall as part of the communication campaign of the Fourth Istanbul Biennial, A School of Schools. The biennial was promoted as a trans-institutional and trans-disciplinary'school'that would reconsider the relationship between learning and design and reflect on the importance of 'learning from learning'.1 It posited a 'process oriented' approach that aimed to produce questions rather than answers. Drawing on the premise that every sort of interaction with design is pedagogical, and hence that everything and every place could be a school, A School of Schools committed to 'extract itself from fixed spaces and durations' and invited everyone in Istanbul to be 'a student in the city which would become a school'.2
