COMPARISON OF DSTATCOM TOPOLOGIES FOR HARMONIC MITIGATION IN INDUCTION FURNACE

Harmonics associated with the operation of an induction furnace under varying load conditions result in huge power losses and have a negative affect on nearby loads. The aim of the present work is harmonic mitigation using a Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) to mitigate the harmonic content of a steel plant employing an induction furnace (IF). A Simulink model of the IF, whose performance matches the real time data obtained from a steel plant IF in operation, is designed. The performance with the application of three topologies, i.e. low level (7-level), intermediate level (11-level) and high level (15-level), of Cascaded Multilevel Inverter (CMLI) based DSTATCOM is evaluated and compared. The results show remarkable improvement in the voltage profile and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the IF.
