This paper introduces a new dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm for upstream Ethernet passive optical networks (EPON) that supports global priority. The algorithm is hierarchical, where it involves the allocation of bandwidth in optical line terminal and optical network units. It supports differentiated services where the excessive bandwidth in this algorithm is allocated fairly according to the global priority. We compare the DBA algorithm proposed with previous DBA algorithms in the literature. The results show significant improvement in terms of bandwidth utilization and overall packet delay.
