ECOLOGICAL URBANIZATION AND THE INVESTIGATION OF THE ECOLOGICAL PLANNING APPROACH IN PUBLIC HOUSING: THE CASE OF ISTANBUL-BASAKSEHIR

Cities’ abilities to meet not only the needs of today but also the needs of future generations depend onsustainable urban functions. The planning of dwellings, the basic living units of the society, should alsobe done by using an ecological approach and in this way their sustainability should be maintained.Public housing areas, which have emerged as a solution to the increasing need for housing in today’scities, should be planned with a sustainable and ecological approach in order to create ecofriendly urban areas within the city. In this paper, the ecological planning approach was examined andthe reflections of this approach on the concept of housing were discussed. The necessary criteria forsustainable ecological planning of public housing areas, based on the analyzed successful internationalecological planning and ecological public housing practices, were determined. Within the frameworkof the determined criteria - the predefined ecological planning criteria, Istanbul Basaksehir PublicHousing Area was analyzed and evaluated.
