Quantitative expression analysis of three cellulose synthases/subunits encoding genes (emcesA1/em,em cesA1b/em, and emcesA2/em) during three fibre development stages [3, 15 and 35 days post anthesis (dpa)] in emGossypium/em em arboreum/em, emG. anomalum, /em and emG. hirsutum /em was undertaken. Exceptionally high expression was observed in emG. hirsutum/em at 15 dpa stage for emcesA1/em and em cesA2/em (6.5 and 7.7 magnitude increase over β tubulin) genes, which might be responsible for longer fibre in emG. hirsutum/em. Moderately high expression of em cesA1 /em gene was recorded in emG. arboreum/em (at 15 dpa)em, /em and in emG. anomalum/em (at 3 and 15 dpa). However emcesA1 /em gene expression was negligible in emG. arboreum, /em and emG. hirsutum/em at 3 dpa and in all three species at 35 dpa. Strong increase in expression levels of emcesA1b/em gene (6.4 magnitude increase over β tubulin) was observed in emG. arboreum/em at 15 dpa stage. Expression levels of emcesA1b/em gene were moderate in emG. hirsutum/em (at 3 and 15 dpa) and in emG. anomalum/em (at 15 dpa); while its expression was low to negligible in rest of the samplesem./em The emcesA2/em gene expressed at moderate to low levels at 3 dpa in emG. anomalum/em and emG. hirsutum/em; at 15 dpa in em G./em emarboreum and G. anomalum/em; and at 35 dpa in all three species. During fibre initiation, expression of all three cellulose synthase genes was negligible in emG. arboreum/em. In fuzzy fibred emG. anomalum/em expression of all three emces/em genes was low (nil for emcesA1 /em at 3 dpa) at all the stages.
