Comparison of Locally Generated Chemical Disinfectants for Drinking Water Treatment in Developing Nations

In a prior study, a water treatment system utilizing sand filtration and locally generated chlorine disinfection was constructed using inexpensive and locally available materials. To determine whether chlorine disinfectant was the optimal choice for that system, locally generated chlorine was compared to locally generated ozone in lab scale tests. A chlorine producing unit and injection system was designed and constructed. This unit was compared to a MP 3000 Ozone Generator in disinfection effectiveness for 4-gallon samples of water from Boomer Lake, Theta Pond, and Strickland Park in Stillwater, OK. Locally generated chlorine and ozone were then compared using the parameters previously found to determine which has greater advantages for use in developing nations. Chlorine was selected for its cost, ability to scale, and effective disinfection.
