span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;font-family:" times="" new="" roman";mso-fareast-font-family:"times="" roman";="" mso-bidi-font-family:"times="" roman";letter-spacing:-.1pt;mso-ansi-language:="" en-gb;mso-fareast-language:en-us;mso-bidi-language:ar-sa"="" lang="EN-GB"Vapour phase hydrogenation of levulinic acid to ?-valerolactone has been accomplished in aqueous phase over copper-zinc-aluminum hydrotalcite, prepared by co-precipitation method using nitrate salts as their precursors. The hydrotalcite system exhibits superior activity in the hydrogenation and cyclization of 10% aqueous solution of levulinic acid with 99% selectivity for ?-valerolactone at 275 supo/supC under atmospheric pressure of hydrogen (flow rate of Hsub2/sub-30 mL/min). /span
