Background: Cause of shoulder pain in rotator cuff tear and frozen shoulder are still unknown. Some papers reported cervical nerve thickening was associated with chronic upper extremes pain. The main nerve supply to the shoulder joint branches from the spinal cord between the fourth and fifth cervical nerve root (C4 and C5 nerve root). The cervical nerve roots can be examined using ultrasound. The purpose of this study is to examine the cross-sectional area of the C5 nerve roots in rotator cuff tear, frozen shoulder, recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation, and healthy volunteers using ultrasonography.
