Large-scale electrophysiology with Neuropixels: Scientific advances and future directions

Large-scaleelectrophysiology–recordingsingleneuronactivityfrom hundreds of neurons simultaneously – has become accessibleand widespread thanks to the development of neural probes fabri-cated with CMOS technology, including Neuropixels. These deviceshave been used to concurrently measure spiking responses ofthousands of neurons spread across dozens of superficial and deepbrain regions. Such datasets have rapidly led to advances in ourunderstandingofbrain-widecoordinateddynamicsandbehavioralcorrelates. In this talk I will describe our recent work studying theneuronal population correlates of spontaneous and goal-directedbehavioracrosscorticalandsubcorticalregionsinmice.Thesestud-ies have revealed distributed representations of behavior and havedelineated networks of regions involved in perceptual decisionsand behavioral engagement. Finally, I will describe new devicesusing Neuropixels technology that expand the range of measure-ments available to neuroscientists.
