Notables et rebelles. Les grands marchands hadramis de Djedda au milieu du xixe siècle

Building on European, Ottoman and Arabic sources, this paper aims at describing the specific group of Hadhrami traders in Jeddah in the mid-nineteenth century. By comparing them to better-known cases, we try to understand their role as notables and merchants in this trading port in the Hijaz, and their unruly attitude to Imperial Authorities (the Ottoman, and the Europeans who had just begun to settle). The 1858 riot in Jeddah throws an interesting light on their trading activities, their structure as a particularly cohesive group, and their reaction to renewed Ottoman authority and newly come European representatives in the region.
