Assessment of Plants for Chromium Concentration in the Basin of Chromite Hills in Lower Malakand-Pakistan

This study was conducted to assess the concentration of chromium in plant samples in the basin ofchromite hills of Heroshah, lower Malakand during January to July, 2013. Twenty four species of plants,comprising of 9 vegetable and field crops and 15 natural vegetations were collected and analyzed for totalchromium concentration. The results showed that the chromium concentration in plant samples were foundabove the maximum permissible limit of > 5 mg Cr kg 1 of edible portion of plant species. Chromium values inplant samples ranged from 33 – 210 mg kg 1 of plant leaves. These results suggested that the plant growingin these areas of Heroshah are highly contaminated with chromium and their use for food and feed purposesis probably unsafe.
