Laparoscopic-assisted visual renal core biopsy: Evolving advocacy for an underutilized procedure

Background: We sought to reassess the status of laparoscopic assisted renal biopsy in the current era of increased documentation of complications from ultrasound guided intervention, and after the development of techniques for minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. The aim of the paper is to highlight the use of laparoscopic assisted renal biopsy in high-risk patients.Case Report: A single institution series of complications of ultrasound guided renal biopsy was collated together with a review of relevant contemporary literature.Ultrasound guided renal biopsy has a significant risk of morbidity in high-risk patients, often related to a failure to obtain haemostasis. Contemporary laparoscopic techniques offer the ability to easily control such blood loss in high risk patients.Conclusions: Laparoscopic assisted renal biopsy should be considered in instances where there is an increased risk of complications with an ultrasound guided approach.
