摘要

Despite efforts made by the government and its partners, household contribution to health financing remains high. This study seeks to assess how much households used to cover high medical expenses and how such expenses impoverished them, and to identify factors related to high medical expenses in Burkina Faso. The descriptive and econometric modeling analytical approach was used in this study. It was realized that in 2009, 1.43 % of Burkinabe households incurred exceptionally high health expenses and that direct health spending plunged nearly 45 000 households into poverty. It was also found that the presence of one child below 5 in a household reduced the risk of having to incur exceptionally high expenses, and that low household living standard, living in the Centre, Centre-East and North Regions as well as hospitalization of one member of the household increased the risk of having to meet exceptionally high health expenses.
