Journalism and cultural system: The sources’ identity in the cultural coverage of Diário do Sul (Porto Alegre, 1986-1988)

This paper aimed at making a portrait of the cultural system by means of a study on the identity of sources and how they were treated in a historical object, the newspaper Diário do Sul (Porto Alegre, 1986-1988), which belonged to the Gazeta Mercantil media group, a reference in terms of cultural coverage in the 1980’s. Through qualitative content analysis and thematic oral history, one noticed that DS gave priority to creation, analysis, and critics, also approaching, with less emphasis, the consumption and (political) organization of the cultural system. The main agents are the subjects of creation and, second, the validation instances – critics, specialists, and the recurrent quotation of the specialized press. One glimpses how journalism participates in the value formation in the field of cultural production.
