Thepurposeofthepilotstudyreportedherewastoevaluateserumandfecaltotalandallergen-specificimmunoglobulinE(IgE)responsestodietarychangeinfiveMaltesexbeagledogswithsuspectedfoodhypersensitivity,comparedwiththoseoffiveclinicallynormaldogs.Clinicalparameters(pruritus,otitis,anddiarrhea)improvedintheMaltesexbeagledogsduringfeedingofanoveldiet,andsignswereexacerbatedbyoralallergenprovocation.Relativeconcentrationsofserumandfecalwheat-,corn-,andmilk-specificIgEweredeterminedbyuseofanELISA.Theonsetofclinicalsignsofdiseasewasaccompaniedbyanincreaseinserumallergen-specificIgEconcentrations.Incontrast,changesinclinicalsignsofdiseaseorallergen-specificIgEvalueswerenotseeninthecontrolgroupundergoingthesameregimen.TotalserumIgEconcentrationwasmeasuredbyuseoftheELISA,andcomparisonwithknownquantitiesofamonoclonalIgEallowedabsolutevaluestobereported.ValueswerehighintheMaltesexbeaglecolony(7to34#59157;g/ml),comparedwiththoseinthecontroldogs(0.7to6#59157;g/ml).TotalserumandtotalfecalIgEconcentrationsdidnotchangeineithergroupduringthestudy.Althoughallergen-specificIgEwasdetectedinthefecesofbothgroups,significantinterassayvariabilitymadeinterpretationoftheresultsdifficult.TheauthorsconcludedthattheseMaltesexbeagledogssatisfiedthecurrentlyrecognizedclinicalcriteriaforthediagnosisofcaninefoodhypersensitivity.Furthermore,theclinicalandserologicresponsesseeninthesedogsinresponsetooralallergenprovocationsuggestthatthismaybeausefulmodelforthestudyofspontaneousfoodhypersensitivity.
