Osteochondromatosis in a Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta)

A5-y-old,male,rhesusmacaque(Macacamulatta)presentedwithaprominentmassslightlyanteriomedialtotherightstifle.Onexam,multipleradiopaquemasseswereidentifiedprotrudingfromthemid-anddistalfemur.Lateralandanteroposteriorradiographsoftherightstifleregionrevealedmultipleexophyticmassesarisingfromthefemur,withmildbonyreactionoftheproximaltibia.Histologicexaminationofbiopsytissuerevealedwovenandlamellarbonewithgranulationtissueandskeletalmuscle.Becausethemacaquewasexhibitingnolamenessorsignsofpain,wedecidedtomonitortheprogressionofthemasses.Minimalchangewasnotedduringthetimepriortostudyterminationat6.5yofage.Necropsyrevealedthatthebonymasseswerecartilage-cappedlesionsarisingnearthegrowthplateofthedistalfemurandmidshaftofthefemurandtibia.Histologicexaminationrevealedchondro-osseousexophyticgrowthsthatblendedimperceptiblywiththecortexandspongiosaofthefemur,consistentwithafinaldiagnosisofmultipleosteochondromas.
