Intussusception in Canine Recipients of Hematopoietic Cell Grafts and Surgical Correction

Intussusceptionisacommoncomplicationaftercaninehematopoieticcelltransplantation(HCT).ThepresentstudywasundertakentoevaluatepredisposingfactorsofintussusceptionandtotestwhetherintussusceptioncanbemanagedsurgicallyduringtheperiodimmediatelyafterHCT.WedeterminedtheincidenceofintussusceptionafterHCTwasperformedin325caninerecipients(autologous,n=43;allogeneic,n=282)duringtheintervalfromJanuary2002toMay2005.Intussusceptionwasdiagnosedin16of325dogs(4.9%).Intussusceptionwasnotsignificantlyassaociatedwiththedoseofirradiation,sourceofhematopoieticgraft,useofimmunosuppressiveagents,gender,orageattransplant.Agroupof9oftheaffecteddogsunderwentsmall-bowelresectionafterdiagnosis,and7weremanagedwithoutsurgicalintervention.Despitecomplicatingfactorssuchasgastrointestinaltoxicityandlowneutrophilandplateletcountsinducedbythemarrowconditioningregimenandtheuseofimmunosuppressiveagents,successfulsurgicalmanagementofintussusceptionwasachievedin6of9dogs,ascomparedwithsuccessfulmanagementof0of7withoutsurgery.Intussusceptiondidnotrecuraftersurgicalinterventioninanydog.RecentHCTandpost-transplantimmunosuppressivetherapyarenotabsolutecontraindicationstosurgicalinterventionforintussusceptionincaninerecipientsofHCT.
