Acohortofrhesusmacaquesusedinneuroscienceresearchwasfoundatroutineexaminationstohavechronicanemia(spunHctlessthan30%).Fouranemic(Hct,24.8%±3.4%)and10control(39.6%±2.9%)macaqueswereassessedtocharacterizetheanemiaanddetermineprobablecause(s);someanimalsinbothgroupshadcephalicimplants.DiagnostictestsincludedCBC,bonemarrowevaluations,ironpanels,andserumerythropoietinandhepcidinconcentrations.Serumironandferritinwere15.8±11.1#956;g/dLand103.8±53.1ng/mL,respectively,fortheanemicgroupcomparedwith109.8±23.8#956;L/dLand88.5±41.9ng/mL,respectively,forthecontrolgroup.Erythropoietinlevelswere16.2toover100mU/mLfortheanemicmacaquescomparedwith0to1.3mU/mLforthecontrolgroup.Hepcidinresultsweresimilarinbothgroups.Becausethefindingsoflowiron,higherythropoietin,andnormalhepcidinintheanemicmacaquessupportediron-deficiencyanemiaoranemiaofchronicdiseasecombinedwithiron-deficiencyanemia,aregimenof4dosesofirondextranwasprovided.Intreatedmacaques,Hctroseto36.3%±6.8%,serumironlevelsincreasedto94.0±41.9#956;g/dL,anderythropoietinlevelsfellto0.15to0.55mU/mL.MaintenanceofnormalHctwasvariablebetweenmacaquesandreflectedindividualongoingclinicalevents.
