Previousstudieshaveindicatedthattheplasmaconcentrationofnitricoxidesynthaseinhibitor,asymmetricdimethylarginine(ADMA),wasincreasedinpostmenopausalwomen.Inthestudyreportedhere,wetestedtherelationshipbetweenthedecreaseofbonemineraldensity(BMD)andADMAconcentrationinovariectomized(OVX)rats.Ovariectomizedratsat8monthsofageweretreatedwith17#59137;-estradiol(10or30#59157;g/kgofbodyweight/day,s.c.)orL-arginine(300mg/kg/day,i.p.)for12weeks(n=10foreachgroup).Pre-andposttreatmenttotalBMD,posttreatmentplasmanitriteitrateandADMAconcentrations,andposttreatmentBMDinthelumbarpartofthespine(L4#8211;L6),femurs,andtibiaswereexamined.OvariectomycausedasignificantdecreaseinseveralBMDindexes,whichwasreversedbyestrogentreatment(P0.05).PlasmanitriteitrateconcentrationwassignificantlydecreasedinOVXrats,butwasrestoredbyestrogentreatment(P0.05).TherewerenodifferencesintheplasmaconcentrationofADMAinOVXorestrogen-treatedrats.L-ArgininehadnoeffectonplasmanitriteitrateconcentrationandBMDinOVXrats.TheseresultssuggestthatovariectomydoesnotinfluencetheplasmaconcentrationofADMA,andthatADMAisnotinvolvedinovariectomy-inducedosteopeniainrats.
