EFFECTS OF THE CORN SILAGE AND FADED OATS SILAGE COMBINATION IN THE PERFORMANCE OF CONFINED STEERS

The experiment included three treatments: T1 - com silage plus concentrate plus urea; T2 - corn silage (70%) plus faded oats silage (Avena strigosa Screb.) (30%) plus concentrate plus urea and T3- com silage (40%) plus faded oats silage (60%) plus concentrate. The concentrate composition was the same for the three treatments and average quantities used in the diets were the following: 31.55; 33.34 and 32.28% for T1, T2 and T3 respectively. Urea was added to T1 and T2 in order to maintain the treatments with the same nitrogen levei (12% of crude protein). Eightheen Canchin steers, 24 months old, with 377kg initial weight were used. All the animais were kept under confined conditions during 84 days, with an adaptation period of 39 days. The average daily weight gain was 1.05; 0.87 and 0.85kg for T1, T2 and T3 (P 0.20468), respectively. The average daily dry matter intake was 9.54; 0.50 and 8.67kg (P 0.18363) and feed conversion was 9.77; 11.36 and 10.62 for T1, T2 and T3 (P 0.05), respectively. The addition of faded oats silage did not affect significantiy the variables studied.
