The relation between air travel and thromboembolic events was first known as “economy class syndrome.”sup1/sup More recently, American College of Chest Physician guidelines suggest, in addition to frequent ambulation and calf muscle exercise, the use of an aisle seat.sup2/sup This supposes that the position of a seat could influence the risk of a thromboembolic event. The guideline authors confirm that this advice is weak and based on low-quality evidence. We wondered if this recommendation for restricting long-distance travel to aisle seating was realistic.
