C hildren are born learners, picking up information about the world shortly after birth and continuing for the rest of their lives. We might expect them to be experts when they arrive at school, eager to learn and finding it easy. Yet every teacher knows that things are not so simple. Students flounder with many ideas and concepts, and no wonder. They are being asked to acquire knowledge that, in some cases, took centuries of careful thinking and research to discover, and that is often counterintuitive.
