Chronic renal pain: An approach to investigation and management

When chronic flank pain is present, there is most often a causethat is readily identified on routine assessment (Table 1). In thevast majority of cases, resolution of the underlying pathologyresults in improvement of the pain. Although epidemiologicaldata are sparse, it seems that chronic renal pain syndromesare uncommon. This brief review will address selected conditionsin which chronic pain is a primary presenting feature,and give an approach to diagnosis and management.
