Considered here is the thermal stress limiter for13K215 steam turbine in Po?aniec Power Plant, which is a typical example of 200 MW steam turbine retrofit. Renewable energy sources participation in energy market is growing, therefore there is flexibility demand for conventional units i.e. fast loading, fast unloading and fast start up etc. Thermal stress in steam turbine thick-walled elements, steam turbine rotor in particular, mainly limits steam turbine flexible operation. Therefore steam turbine is usually controlled and protected by on-line stress control i.e. thermal stress limiter. In case steam turbine retrofits in Po?aniec Power Plant, each steam turbine was delivered by Alstom with thermal stress limiter implemented on a stand-alone PLC (Programmable Logic Controller). Thermal stress limiter for 13K215 steam turbine retrofits protects HP and IP rotors as well as HP and IP valve chests. Thermal stress limiter ensures steam turbine safety operation for required by the steam turbine owner operating period. Thermal stress limiter also ensures the shortest possible steam turbine start up time within assumed start up number.
