THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF OPEN SHELVES

The policy of the open shelf system in our public libraries is no longer a debatable question. It is now thirty-two years since this plan was first presented at a meeting of the American Library Association. The evident satisfaction given to public library users has led to its almost univer-sal adoption. Whether the unlimited open shelf system is advisable and practicable for our medical libraries is the reason for presenting this subject for discussion today.
