The filing rules set forth in the new A. L. A. code are based on the fourth edition of Cutter's Rules for a dictionary catalogue and on current usage throughout the country. Alternative forms are given, and there is a selectedlist of rules recommended for small libraries which should prove to be one of the most valuable sections of the book. Unlike the Cleveland Public Library Filing rules and Cutter's Rules, there is no explanation of terminology to assist the apprentice librarian, and in actual use it will probably be necessary for the filer to have access to the U. S. Government Printing Office Manual of foreign languages for the use of printers and translators to supplement the filing rules.
