In the city of Sendai, about 190 miles northeast of Tokyo, at the Tohoku (Northeastern) Imperial University, there was established in 1915 a School of Medicine, with its accompanying library. In 1927, the present library building was completed, and an addition for medical students was built in 1949. This is one of the two university medical libraries north of Tokyo, the other being on the northern island in the city of Sapporo at Hokkaido University, over 200 miles farther north.
