LOOKING FORWARD: POSSIBLE DEVELOPMENTS IN THE PUBLICATION OF MEDICAL LITERATURE

IT HAS become increasingly evidenit that the publication of scientific literature presents certain difficult problems, and the various proposals for their alleviation which are constantly appearing indicate that scientists are dissatisfied with existing conditions. The problems which exist and the suggestions for their solution have been primarily concerned with three major factors: (I) the increasing quantity of material available for publication; (2) the increasing difficulties and complexities involved in obtaining and publishing abstracts of scientific literature; (3) the enormous, steadily increasing, number of journals, and the difficulty of supplying even a small proportion of these journals to investigators.
