"The approach to [the writing of] any biography should be the compilation of a bibliography," writes Dr. Emmet Field Horine in the preface to one of his latest books, Biographical Sketch and Guide to the Writings of Charles Caldwell, M.D. For forty years Dr. Horine searched and collected,read and wrote, with the idea of producing a full length biography of this controversial medical figure of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Though Dr. Horine has abandoned such an extensive biography of Caldwell, he has through this volume published such a wealth of information regarding the man and his times that no one else need do so. His book may be considered definitive.
