Back in 1999, Dyson Research approached myonic to help develop a bearing for a 100,000rpm switched reluctance motor with a life requirement nearly three times that of motors fitted to current vacuum cleaners. Sample bearings produced in a matter of weeks formed the foundation of a relationship that has seen the motor recently enter production, with all of the original performance criteria being met. Dyson believes that future domestic appliances will require motors offering very high speeds at acceptable noise levels, coupled with robust and reliable operation. Moreover, Dyson's preference is for motors that do not employ brushes, and which are smaller and lighter than conventional units. Hence its decision to develop a switched reluctance (SR) motor, capable of speeds of up to 100,000rpm.
