Yaskawa delivers first viable matrix converter drive

Yaskawa has launched what it believes is the first electric motor variable speed drive based on Matrix Converter technology. The first products, in power ratings up to 20kW, are likely to be available from the third quarter of 2005. A holy grail for the drives industry, matrix converters have, hitherto, been difficult to realise using existing silicon. However, the extraordinary advances made in power semiconductor devices and processor speeds, not to mention years of painstaking research, have at last made it possible.
