Deep below the Carpathian Mountains in Romania the earth quakes and shakes. The reason for this tectonic violence is a mystery that is difficult to unravel even with the latest measuring techniques and seismic and tomographical research. In some places the arrows indicate shifts of five millimetres, but most are much less, say one or two millimetres per year.
