摘要

Concerns about the nation's fraying infrastructure have begun reappearing in the media again. Unfortunately, this pattern seems to repeat itself over time: much concern and handwringing is evidenced over the deteriorating condition of our roads and bridges, calls to action are made, then the issue fades from our collective consciousness until either a catastrophe occurs or the news cycle repeats itself. I had a speaker in my class last night who is the president of a heavy-haul trucking company and the current head of the South Carolina Trucking Association. He is intimately familiar with the highway infrastructure issues because his company requires so many special state permits to move what they do. He expressed deep concern that the nation is close to being past the point of no return with respect to stopping the decline of one of our most precious assets.
