Military Sealift Command (MSC)

The Navy's Military Sealift Command (MSC) provides ocean transportation for DOD cargo to sustain US forces worldwide during peacetime and in war. More than 90 percent of all the equipment and supplies needed to sustain the US military are carried by sea. MSC also operates Combat Logistics Force ships that replenish and support the Navy fleet at sea as well as Special Mission ships that serve as at-sea platforms for various Navy and other federal government agencies. MSC operates approximately 110 ships on a daily basis around the globe. MSC's 49 prepositioning ships support the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Defense Logistics Agency by providing quick and efficient movement of military gear between operating areas without reliance on other nations' transportation networks. Prepositioning ships include a combination of US government-owned ships, chartered US-flagged ships and ships activated from the Maritime Administration's Ready Reserve Force. Headquartered in Norfolk, VA as of November 2014, MSC has a workforce of almost 9,500 people. In addition, five area commands provide MSC-unique expertise and operational perspective to Navy fleet commanders worldwide. The areas commands are operationally focused and are aligned with the numbered fleet logistics staffs within their area of responsibility: MSC Atlantic in Norfolk, VA; MSC Pacific in San Diego, CA; MSC Europe and Africa in Naples, Italy; MSC Central in Manama, Bahrain; and MSC Far East in Singapore.
