In early November 2006, as official Washington was reeling from the mid-term elections and the ensuing purges among Congressional and Administration leaders, both the White House of Pres. George W. Bush and the new Democratic Party Congressional leadership promised to work together to find a way out of the US military deployment in Iraq. Missing from all of the political rhetoric was reference to the concurrent changes in Iraq itself, as well as the changing realities in the greater Middle East.
