Brazil: The Brazilian Senate voted on August 31, 2016, 61 to 20 to impeach and remove Pres. Dilma Rousseff from office, ending the 13 years of Workers' Party governance. The vote meant that Acting Pres. Michel Temer, the former Vice-President, was sworn in immediately as President to complete the remaining two years and four months of the Presidential term. A separate Senate vote-42 to 36-prohibited outgoing Pres. Roussefffrom holding public office for eight years. Ms Rousseff was unrepentant after the guilty verdict of the Senate, noting: "They think they've defeated us, but they're wrong. I know we will all fight." She said that the verdict was a parliamentary coup, and that she would appeal her impeachment.
