Coast Guard Commandant Cancels Planned Surface Navy Association Address

More than 40,000 members of the U.S. Coast Guard began working without pay on Jan. 15, Coast Guard Commandant Adm Karl Schultz canceled his planned address to the Surface Navy Association on Jan. 16. "To my knowledge this marks the first time in our nation's history that service members in a U.S. Armed Force have not been paid during a lapse in government appropriations," Schultz wrote in a Jan. 15 letter to service members of the U.S. Coast Guard. "It is also not lost on me that our dedicated civilians are already adjusting to a missed paycheck. We are confronting this challenge together."
